A farmhouse, its territory, traditions, wine and food

The "terroir"

Capriata d’Orba lays in the heart of High Monferrato, in the hills between Piedmont and Liguria on a plateau with unrestricted breath taking views in all directions: from Le Cascine you can admire the Mont Blanc and the Matterhorn or take a glance to the 36 holes Villa Carolina golf course bordering the Southern edge of the property or watch the surrounding vineyards where Gavi, Dolcetto and Barbera wines are produced.

But this location delivers much more than that: there are history, archaeological sites dating back to the Roman ages, castles and fortresses witnessing the battles fought from the XI to the XVII century to claim control over these strategic hills.

Needless to say, today Alto Monferrato is mostly renowned its wine and food, as well as for its wild nature. In autumn, during the grapes harvest every corner, every village and every building seem to be taken by the rhythm of the harvest, lot of trailers full with grapes slowly head to the cellars where lights are on all night long to start the production of world famous wines.

In a tipical and romantic early winter scenery, hardly visible in the fog, solitary men with a couple of dogs can be seen walking in the cold, heading to secret places where the precious and prelibate white truffle will be collected. So hard to find in the ground and so delightful to enjoy in one of the many restaurants where you will find also all the specialities of this rich territory, always served with great wines.

Many itineraries witness the variety and richness of this region: The Wine route (of course), The Cheese route, The Chestnut and Mushrooms route, whose names recall only its dominant features but perhaps hide the variety of further interesting attractions: thermal baths, the rest of a Roman age acqueduct, palaces and churches…

The Castles route runs through dozens of villages dominated by fortresses and castles in strategic position, most of them perfectly maintained and hosting public or private events.

The Dolci Terre route (“Sweet Lands route”) is dedicated to the Gavi wine, the chocolate industry and the culinary tradition.

The Villas route is characterized by ancient and beautiful estates with their cellars, mainly in the Gavi wine region, not forgetting the dominating Gavi fortress dating back to the Xth century.

Many of these routes understandably cross each other and it happens therefore that Le Cascine property standx in The Dolci Terre, as well as in The Villas and in The Castles routes.
